Overview

The Senior Packaging Engineer will be responsible for leading packaging development of NPD and improvement projects from inception to prototyping to documentation; ensuring milestones are met. He/She will be responsible for all required specifications, documentation, and package testing to support product release. This individual will be required to take a leadership role with packaging projects and possess the ability to influence and interface with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develops ideas, concepts and prototypes to solve problems and meet customer/consumer needs in new and superior ways
  • Understands packaging-related business needs and competitive landscape
  • Identifies needs, gaps and opportunities
  • Leads the packaging development for new initiatives
  • Technical interface with suppliers
  • Identifies technical and project risks and ensures strategies are in place to effectively mitigate risks
  • Identifies key quality attributes for packaging components
  • Works with plant associates to gain alignment to specifications
  • Develops, writes and validates test methods to evaluate performance of packaging prototypes
  • Provides guidance and direction to junior packaging engineers
  • Trains new hires on test methods and departmental SOPs
  • Plans own workload to ensure tasks and objectives are completed and collaborates as a participative team member to ensure R&D milestones are met
  • Makes and supervises production of samples for marketing presentations, laboratory evaluation, consumer, and clinical testing
  • Identify cost optimization programs for primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging
  • Ensure robust specification procedures and standards are consistently applied across all programs
  • Ensure the design of cost effective package components meet manufacturing and quality requirements for efficient line production and finished product-shipping standards.

Qualifications

  • Highly knowledgeable with ArtiosCAD, CapePack , Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Highly knowledgeable with ISTA, TAPPI, and ASTM test methods for packaging
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills; excellent project management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams; able to work in a fast-paced environment, with multiple projects of varying complexity
  • Proven results with building strong customer relationships, anticipating customer needs, and delivering customer-centric solutions
  • Ensures accountability and consistently achieving results
  • Is able to build partnerships and works collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives
  • Makes sense of complex, high quantity, and sometimes contradictory information to effectively solve problems
  • Is able to plan and prioritize work to meet commitments aligned with organizational goals.
  • Knowledge of Packaging Engineering processes such as product life cycle, packaging design and change management requirements.
  • Good communication and influencing skills are critical capabilities for the incumbent due to the cross –functional collaboration required with customers including project teams
  • Strength in both oral and written presentation skills are a prerequisite to success
  • Strong analytical, organizational, decision making, written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Computer skills/ability to work with various software packages
  • Ability to travel up to 5-10%
  • Ability to lift products/package testing up to 50 pounds
